Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist?

Yes. A GP referral is required to see our psychiatrist and to claim a Medicare rebate for your consultation. We recommend asking your GP for a referral letter addressed to Empowering Path Clinic before booking your first appointment.

With a valid GP referral, the Medicare rebate covers part of your consultation fee. Current fees are:

Appointment typeFeeMedicare rebateGap (out-of-pocket)
Initial appointment (60 minutes)$700$262$438
Follow-up — medication review (30 minutes)$340$134$206
Follow-up — consultation (45 minutes)$450$183$267

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed additional specialist training in mental health. Because they’re medically qualified, psychiatrists can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe and manage medication, and treat complex or severe presentations. A psychologist is not a medical doctor and cannot prescribe medication, but provides therapy and psychological treatment. Many people see both — a psychiatrist for diagnosis and medication management, and a psychologist for ongoing talk therapy — and the two professionals often work together as part of a person’s care.

Yes. With a valid GP referral, you’re eligible for a Medicare rebate on your consultation. Payment is required in full at the time of your appointment, and we process the rebate for you on the spot — you don’t need to make a separate claim.eo.

Yes, telehealth appointments are available, in addition to in-person consultations at our St Leonards clinic. Medicare rebates apply to telehealth mental health consultations in the same way as in-person visits, provided you have a valid referral.

Our current waiting list for a first appointment is under two months. Wait times can vary depending on demand, so we’d encourage you to get in touch as early as possible once you have a referral, and we’ll confirm current availability.

Your first appointment is usually longer than follow-up visits, giving your psychiatrist time to understand your history, current symptoms, and goals for treatment. You’ll be asked about your mental health history, any medications you’re currently taking, and what’s brought you to seek support now. From there, your psychiatrist will discuss a treatment plan with you, which may include medication, referral to other services, or a plan for ongoing sessions
